About the Speakers:
Dr. Keith Pannell, UTEP Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, has co-authored research publications such as one regarding a study in order to identify the sources and patterns of heavy metal dispersion, by using an attic dust analyses approach which has not been previously been applied in this area to study the smelter emissions from over 100 years of operation. The El Paso del Norte region in the United States is a region of complex topography that is home to more than 2 million people who share the same air.
Verónica Carbajal is a native of El Paso and Juarez. As an attorney for Texas RioGrande Legal Aid, Inc., she has worked on a number of environmental justice cases, including the air permit challenge against ASARCO, the remediation of the site and attempting to find help for the Ex-ASARCO Workers as they contended with a number of serious health issues.
Elaine M. Hampton, author of Copper Stain, is a retired Associate Professor of Education at the University of Texas at El Paso. She was an award-winning teacher in communities near the Mexican border and is a researcher in the fields of Mexican and Mexican-American education.
