What is the cultural, biological, and historic significance of a 500 year old spirit? Learn more about tequila this February. Our third Nerd Night will pair delicious tequilas with three different speakers discussing various social and scientific aspects tequila amidst an elegant exhibit of photographs by Joel Salcido depicting tequila production.

Love the work of Joel Salcido? UTEP’s Centennial Museum is flying him to El Paso for this event! You’ll have a chance to share your questions and comments with Joel at our 3rd Nerd Night. Most recently he exhibited his Texas Small Town Series during the China 14th International Photographic Art Exhibition in Lishui, China. This series is now in the permanent collection of the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing, China. His 2012 group exhibit, Descriptions of China, was held at the Institute of Texan Cultures in association with the Smithsonian Institution in San Antonio, Texas. In 2004, he was one of three Fulbright scholarship finalists for a Bolivian photography project and in 2005 was nominated for the Art House Texas Prize.
The emblematic landscape photograph from the Aliento A Tequila series titled, “Atotonilco el Alto,” is now part of the National Heritage Art Collection of Mexico and resides in the permanent collection of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Mexico City. This same image was also selected for last year’s Texas Book Festival poster and was unveiled in Dallas by former First Lady Laura Bush.
Joel Salcido continues to work as an editorial, commercial and fine art photographer in Austin and is a contributing photographer for Texas Monthly and produces art photography for art galleries, ad agencies and corporate clients.
